First All-Inclusive Playground Opens in Beaumont

The City of Beaumont takes leaps on November 8, 2023, as it reopened Shadow Creek Park with an all-inclusive, state-of-the-art playground design to provide a welcoming and accessible space for children of all ages and abilities.

Mayor Martinez led the ribbon-cutting ceremony on November 8, marking a significant milestone in the city’s commitment to community well-being. The newly revamped park features accessibility ramps, a variety of slides, cozy spaces for sensory relief, musical elements, high-back equipment for good body position, and opportunities for social inclusion and interaction regardless of ability.

“Our goal has always been to create spaces in Beaumont that include all, especially children,” said Mayor Julio Martinez III. “The revitalization of Shadow Creek Park reflects our commitment as a city to come together and enjoy everything that Beaumont offers.”

The grand opening ceremony celebrated the collaborative effort that brought this vision to life. Community-based organization DeAnn’s PAASS Kids was acknowledged for their invaluable input and feedback on the playground equipment and support for the pour and play resurfacing.

The City of Beaumont was awarded two statewide Health Play grants for the installation of new playgrounds, with Shadow Creek Park as one of those locations. The grant program, which matched funding at 100 percent, was provided by the California Parks and Recreation Society (CPRS), Playcore and Gametime. These playgrounds serve as a National Demonstration Site (NDS) across California and use evidence-based best practices of inclusion, physical activity, and fitness to enhance recreation spaces for all. As an NDS, the design adheres to the seven principles of Inclusive Playground Design, which involve being fair, included, smart, independent, safe, active, and comfortable.

In addition to revitalizing the park playground, the City of Beaumont repainted the basketball courts, installed new ADA benches, and trash cans.
