Domestic Violence

Domestic Violence is an "epidemic of major proportions" according to the U.S. Surgeon General. It is the major cause of injury to women in the United States, more common then muggings, auto accidents, and rape combined.

  • Domestic violence is a crime and is a major factor in other community problems such as homelessness, unemployment and poverty.
  • Up to 50% of all women may experience abuse by a partner.
  • About 5% of reported victims are men.
  • Once begun, the cycle of violence tends to continue, increasing with frequency and severity. Permanent disability of death may result.
  • Violence occurs in families of all incomes, races, religious groups, and occupations. There's no "typical" victim.
  • The pattern of domestic violence will affect future generations . Children in violent homes are at least at a 50% higher risk of child abuse, and may become abusers of victims as adults.
